Dot Cakes! Where to find the viral dessert that blew up in Columbus overnight

Yet another viral food trend has taken over Columbus, this time jam-packed with sprinkles.

A New York bakery named Dot Cakes conceptualized these wildly popular mini cakes layered with frosting and topped with an explosion of nonpareil sprinkles. Like most foods that go viral online overnight, dot cakes has people lining up to get a taste.

“I saw them start to get some buzz online in other cities last week and knew we had to recreate them here. We started selling them last week and have seen a bunch of other local bakeries join the trend this week which has been really cool,” Love Riley owner Riley Jo says.

Love Riley offers two dot cake options: funfetti and chocolate, both frosted with vanilla buttercream and loaded with the crunchy rainbow nonpareil sprinkles.

“The sprinkles are really visually appealing and give the cake a unique crunchy texture. The online craze over them definitely brings some excitement as well,” Jo says.

Love Riley convinced other local bakeries to jump on the dot cake train. Soon enough, The Cheesecake Girl and Bite This by Annie were creating dot cakes with their signature twists.

While The Cheesecake Girl’s dot cake may seem like the classic funfetti, owner Sam Strange added a layer of–of course–cheesecake.

If you know Bite This by Annie, then you know rainbow-sprinkled cakes are not typically their style–and it still isn’t. The goth bakery offers a chocolate dot cake with vanilla frosting topped with either black sprinkles or classic Halloween colors.

“Who am I to deny the joy and whimsy a sprinkle can bring?” says owner Annie Dickinson.
