After 120 years of baking, this Ohio bread company announces closure

The Schwebel’s Baking Company, a major bread supplier for retail and grocery services based in Youngstown, announced this week that it will be closing and plans to liquidate the business after more than 120 years of service. 

In a press release sent to NBC Youngstown affiliate 21 News, the company claims the decision to liquidate is due to operational and financial restraints, along with a decline in customer demand. There was an attempt to find a buyer or investor, but no deal could be reached, and the company was left with no choice but to close.

Founded in 1906 by Joseph and Dora Schwebel, who baked bread for their neighbors in Youngstown, Ohio, transformed into one of the fastest-growing, family-owned wholesale bakers in America. Expanding beyond Ohio, building distribution centers across the state and in Pennsylvania and New York. 

The Schwebel’s Baking Company plans to continue operations through the Fourth of July weekend before officially winding down operations and ceasing business for good.
