After 45 years, Columbus sports anchor retiring from full-time role

One of the most recognizable faces in Columbus television is stepping away from his full-time role.

Longtime WBNS-10TV sports anchor and reporter Dom Tiberi announced he is retiring from his full-time position at the station after an extraordinary 45-year career.

Tiberi’s career at 10TV began in 1981. Over the next four-and-a-half decades he became synonymous with sports coverage in Central Ohio. He covered everything from Ohio State football national championships and Columbus Blue Jackets playoff runs to the Memorial Tournament and countless high school athletes.

Beyond sports, Tiberi is known for his advocacy work surrounding distracted driving after the death of his daughter, Maria. He and his family launched the Maria’s Message initiative, which promotes safe driving practices among teens and young adults. Tiberi testified before lawmakers and pushed for tougher distracted-driving penalties and better driver education. His advocacy helped build support for Ohio’s distracted driving law, which made using or holding a cellphone while driving a primary offense (allowing officers to stop drivers solely for that violation).

Tiberi was present when Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed the legislation into law and has continued to promote additional safe-driving measures for young drivers.

While he’s stepping away from daily duties, Tiberi isn’t disappearing entirely. 10TV said he will continue working with the station as a special contributor. You can expect to see Tiberi offering commentary on Ohio State football and other special events.
