Car slams into Hilliard gas station for second time

Jonathan Keilholz

A Hilliard gas station was hit by a car for the second time in recent memory early Friday morning. Firefighters said a driver crashed into the station’s pumps and caught fire.

Fire crews responding to the call initially believed they were heading to a building fire, but instead they found a car that had slammed into a pump, knocking it off its base and sparking flames. The fire was quickly put out, and no one was hurt.

According to Norwich Township Fire officials, this wasn’t the first time the station has been struck. A previous crash at the same location also involved a vehicle hitting the gas station, damaging the canopy and pumps.

“We were very fortunate today,” the department said in a comment on social media.

Photos show the crash happened at a Sunoco station near the front of Bear’s Bagels. Damage appeared to be concentrated around the pump area.

Investigators have not said what caused the crash. But firefighters were likely able to get there quickly because the fire department is steps from the scene.
