Change.org petition created to stop cars from crashing into Columbus buildings
On Friday, a vehicle plowed into the front entrance of recently-opened eatery Mezcla, shuttering it indefinitely.
That wasn’t the only direct effect of the crash either, as it prompted the creation of a Change.org petition titled Stop Cars from Crashing into Buildings on Summit and 4th Streets, one that urges Columbus leaders to address the issues of what the petition refers to “traffic violence.”
The petition claims similar incidents have become “commonplace” at many intersections of both Summit and 4th Streets. It notes that property damage, lost business and potential harm to residents are often caused by the crashes.

In attempt to diffuse the problem, the petition proposes adding:
- Improved sight lines (move parking further back)
- Tactical urbanism traffic-calming devices
- Hardened barriers along critical sections of intersections, such as bollards or concrete planters. Critically, these barriers must effectively be strong enough to stop cars from hitting buildings or people.
It also suggests the city returns Summit and 4th Street to two-way traffic, with lane and intersection redesigns to slow vehicles in neighborhoods. You can read the entire document here.
Currently, the Change.org petition has 187 signature.
