Shoppers coming and going from Bexley’s Giant Eagle Market District Express were shocked to see smoke and flames engulf a vehicle in the busy parking lot, damaging at least one other car.

Police Chief Gary Lewis Jr. told 614NOW it happened on Sunday afternoon at the supermarket on Bexley’s East Main Street. A 9-1-1 caller alerted first responders to the situation just before 4:15 p.m.

“The vehicle was completely engulfed,” Chief Lewis said.

“I was there – no one in the car but the car and the one next to it were torrrrrrn up,” wrote Reddit user Mean_Ad2638. Chief Lewis confirmed the fire damaged a parked vehicle next to the one that went up in flames.

Nobody was hurt because nobody was in either vehicle, Chief Lewis said.

It’s unclear what sparked the fire, but Chief Lewis said the Columbus Division of Fire is looking into it. Fire services in Bexley are provided by the Columbus Division of Fire.
