Central Ohio cigar lounge to be demolished for more parking

As part of Powell City Council’s plans to revitalize its Downtown area, the council voted on several items on September 1, including the demolition of one classic cigar lounge.

The Powell Development Corporation (PDC) board met on August 25 to approve awarding a $25,000 Façade Grant to property owner Vincent J. Margello. According to the resolution memo, the agreement authorizes the City to pay 50% of this construction work, not to exceed $88,600.00. The agreement anticipates a four-year term and fixed annual payments of $115,000.00 to be paid quarterly each February, May, August, and November.

Margello initially sought a grant to cover building renovations, but inspections proved the building to be in bad shape, which led to the demolition and parking agreement.

The three-acre site will hold an estimated 60 public parking spaces. “The benefit too, is that when some of these private businesses are overrun with parking volume, there’s now 60 public spaces directly next door,” City Manager Andy White told the board.

Businesses around Stogies, such as Local Roots at 15 E. Olentangy St., would receive overflow parking.

With the Council’s approval, White intends to pave the parking spots by fall. For Stogies fans, the Cigar Lounge will soon relocate to a new home at 94 W. Olentangy St.
