A U.S. Secret Service member allegedly saw William Defoor, 26, breaking the windows of Mr. Vance’s home with a hammer. Officials said that Defoor also tried to break the window of a federal law enforcement vehicle that was blocking Mr. Vance’s home. He allegedly refused to drop his weapon

Defoor was federally charged with damaging government property, engaging in physical violence against a property in a restricted building or grounds, and assaulting, resisting, or impeding federal officers, according to The New York Times.

Mr. Vance and his family were not in Ohio at the time of the incident. According to the arrest report, Defoor has been diagnosed as schizophrenic. In 2023, he was charged with criminal trespassing, and in 2024, he was arrested on vandalism charges.
