A shooting at Put-in-Bay has left a father of four dead, interrupting the busy summer season at one of Ohio’s best-known party destinations.
According to the Put-in-Bay Police Department, police cruisers and ambulances responded shortly after midnight Thursday, July 23, to a report of a shooting at Mr. Ed’s Bar & Grille.
First responders said they found a 39-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The man died from his injuries despite life-saving efforts. No other people were injured, police said.

Put-in-Bay officers immediately requested assistance from the Ottawa County Major Crimes Unit and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Deputies with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and agents with the Major Crimes Unit responded to South Bass Island to assist. The Ohio State Highway Patrol provided air support in the search for the suspect.
Police said a suspect was taken into custody by members of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office a few hours after the shooting just before 4 a.m. Authorities said no other individuals were being sought.
Family has identified the victim as Rob Russell of Chesterland, Ohio. On a public GoFundMe page, his wife said Rob was there to celebrate his upcoming 40th birthday.
Lindsay Russell, Rob Russell’s wife, wrote: “Rob was shot and killed in a senseless act of violence. I know I won’t be able to say everything perfectly, and I don’t think words could ever capture the depth of this loss. Rob was so much more than a husband and father. He was a constant presence, a source of strength, a comforting hand, a helping hand, a perseverer, a man of unwavering faith, and a father who intentionally led and loved his family and children toward Christ every single day. The void he leaves behind is immeasurable.”
Police haven’t released any details on a motive. Family and the business where the shooting occurred have said online their understanding is the attack was completely random.
Ottawa County court records reviewed by 614NOW show the suspect is 21-year-old Colton Smith of Michigan. As of Sunday morning, Smith was still being held for prosecution with a $1 million bond. He was charged with murder.
Violence on Put-in-Bay is extremely rare. Known for its bars, nightlife and waterfront entertainment, Put-in-Bay draws thousands of visitors each summer, making it one of Ohio’s most popular seasonal tourism destinations.
