Columbus hospital closing emergency room, focusing on ‘primary and preventative care’

Mount Carmel is shifting focus with upcoming changes to their care site options.

On Wednesday, Mount Carmel released a statement announcing the upcoming closure of its emergency department to open a primary and preventive care center. 

The Mount Carmel Franklinton Emergency Department will close on August 22, and the Mount Carmel Franklinton Care Center will open on August 24.

“Our goal is to offer services in Franklinton that genuinely reflect community need,” said Brian Pierson, Mount Carmel South Region President, in a statement on Wednesday. “We are evolving our services to grow preventative and wellness care that is flexible, easier to access, and more affordable for the community.”

According to data gathered by Mount Carmel, most people who visit their emergency department do not require emergency services. As one of the most expensive points of access to care, Mount Carmel sees this as an opportunity to pivot to a more modern, preventative and primary care hub.

The new care center will focus on walk-in and same-day care with extended hours, with the goal of limiting emergency visits by improving long-term health outcomes.

The Mount Carmel Franklinton Care Center will be located in the Fortuity Building at 775 W. Broad St., Suite 200. Mount Carmel emphasizes its commitment to the Franklinton community and its workers by reassigning all emergency department staff to other care sites.
