Here’s why an Ohio Capybara baby has million of views on IG alone
An exotic animal encounter in Shelby, Ohio is going viral for a surprise addition to the farm. Staff were overjoyed to discover that their capybara couple (Winne and Winston) were pregnant—and had given birth overnight without warning. A healthy “baby bara” unexpectedly joined the family.

If you’re not aware, it’s difficult to determine if a capybara is expecting, as they don’t show many physical signs until very late in pregnancy. Staff at Westmiester Farms in Shelby, Ohio were surprised by their new addition to the capybara family earlier this month. The viral video posted by the farm shows staff discovering the baby capybara the morning after he was born. The video has over 1 million views on Instagram alone, and fans are invested in the capybara family’s journey.
The farm has been keeping viewers in the loop on “baby bara’s” development, weight gain, gender reveal, and the process of updating the capybara enclosure. The unexpected viral media attention has also resulted in donations from viewers to aid in the enclosure upgrade with some much-needed renovations. According to staff, it’s nearly impossible to tell when a capybara is pregnant—hence the surprise. They said, “We had seen some signs that made us wonder if Winnie might be expecting, but we never confirmed a pregnancy. So imagine our surprise when we walked in that morning and discovered that Winnie and Winston had officially become parents! Talk about a surprise blessing. ”
The baby bara is a boy, staff held a gender reveal party where they announced the DNA results. The little guy’s name is still up for debate, viewers are helping decide the top two options and the proud parents will “choose” from there.
