How social media cracked the case of Columbus sneaker thief
Columbus came to the rescue after a Short North Sneaker and Streetwear retailer fell victim to a bizarre alleged theft.
On July 15, surveillance footage captured a man allegedly stealing a pink jacket from 614Sneaker, a staple of Columbus sneaker culture located at 970 N. High St. The shop posted the footage on social media, along with text messages confronting the individual.
According to 614Sneaker, the alleged thief had previously been a regular customer, selling items and even establishing camaraderie with the Sneaker staff. After being confronted twice, the man denied taking any items.

According to the text messages, the man claims he sent a staff member money for the jacket via Zelle, then claimed he was a criminal defense lawyer willing to take the matter to court.
After the post on social media, the same pink jacket being worn by a man walking Downtown Columbus was quickly spotted.
Photos and videos began quickly circulating of 614Sneaker loyalists confronting the man, yet he still denied stealing from the shop. In one video, the perpetrator even begins running away from the confrontation.
Less than 6 hours after the initial post, 614Sneaker posted a photo proudly holding the pink jacket—although ripped and dirty—with the caption: “WE LOVE THIS FREAKING CITY”
