‘Just a gut punch:’ After opening last fall, chain consignment abruptly closes all locations

Yesterday, a national consignment chain–offering space for local makers and artisans to sell their products–abruptly closed all of its locations across the country, including its sole Columbus storefront.

According to an announcement shared with store vendors obtained by 614Now, Painted Tree closed all of its stores across the country–more than 50 in total–on April 14. It opened its sole Central Ohio space, which was located at 59 Meadows Park Ave. in Lewis Center, in November of 2025.

“It is with deep regret that we write to inform you that Painted Tree Boutiques has made the very difficult decision to cease all business operations today; Painted Tree will not be conducting any further retail sales at any location,” the announcement reads.

The company confirmed the closure with 614Now and noted that it stemmed from a number of factors.

“The retail landscape has changed in ways none of us could have fully anticipated. Rising costs, shifting market conditions, and the evolving nature of how people shop have presented challenges that, despite our best efforts and our community’s unwavering support, we have not been able to overcome. We are heartbroken by this outcome,” a statement from the company reads.

With more than 50 locations nationwide before the closure, the business was billed as a “creative community of shoppes,” where local makers and artisans paid a small fee for space in their storefronts, with Painted Tree also taking a small portion of their sales.

According to former Painted Tree vendor Erica Boose, the owner of Ohio Girl Bakes, the abrupt closure of the store put her in a difficult place.

“Luckily I have three upcoming events where I’ll be able to sell my perishable products, so I’m not worried about that, but the other gifts and retail are an issue,” she told 614Now. “I recently expanded into cocktail napkins, tea towels, mugs, things that paired well with my products. I wanted to align myself up there as a one-stop shop, and I was really in a groove. Now I have a basement full of merchandise.

Boose said that, had Painted Tree informed vendors about the closing earlier, she would have refrained from purchasing the new items for the Lewis Center space. She said she believes many other vendors (she estimates there were several hundred in total at the Lewis Center store) feel the same.

“It’s just a gut punch, had I known things were as bad as they were, I wouldn’t have gone there in the first place,” She said. “[Their struggles] didn’t just happen five months ago, they knew before they opened here, yet they still opened here.”

Boose plans to hit the ground running despite the setback. If you’re interested in trying her mixes, they can be purchased at Ohio Girl Bake’s website. Her products are available at Pure Roots in Westerville, Coffee Vault in Galena and Henmick Farm & Brewery in Delaware. She also sells to a handful of local corporate clients, and will be holding a pop-up at Made Local at the Pinnacle Golf Club Ballroom on April 30.
