Firefights respond to a fire at The Thurman Cafe

The Thurman Cafe, a staple in German Village, suffered “significant fire and smoke damage” over the weekend after a fire ripped through the building, Columbus Division of Fire Lt. Nick Davis said.

Around 2 p.m. yesterday, during work hours, firefighters responded to reports of a fire toward the rear of the restaurant at 183 Thurman Ave. The incident was contained in approximately two hours. All staff members and customers got out safely, and no injuries were reported, Davis said.

The cause and extent of the damages is still under investigation, he shared, but the eatery said in a statement on social media that the damage was caused by an electrical fire.

“Seems like the public is pretty upset about it because it’s a landmark, you know?” Davis said.

The bar and grill boasts the “tastiest burgers” in Columbus, according to their website, including its signature “Thurmanator,” a massive $30 burger with two 12-ounce burger patties and a hefty number of toppings to boot.

The eatery shared that “it’s hard to say when we will be able to reopen, but we look forward to that day.”
