‘Missed my head by inches:’ metal piece falls off coaster at Cedar Point

At Cedar Point on Father’s Day, an amusement park attendee was nearly hit by a metal piece that fell off the Magnum XL-200. The attendee shared her experience via social media.

The post said “Roller coaster almost took me out today. A piece of metal missed my head by inches. Thought the scariest part of the roller coaster was the drop. Turns out it was the falling metal.” A Cedar Point spokesperson confirmed to the Akron Beacon Journal that the piece was a washer that came off the coaster’s lift mechanism. 

The ride was shut down for a bit before being re-opened within the same day. The park-goer who experienced the near miss also said, “They just thanked us for letting them know. They shut the ride down for about an hour then did test rides then it was back up and running again. They also gave us 4 free premium meal vouchers to be used in the future because they said when that happens most people don’t let them know and they’d rather know and check to ensure everyone is safe.” The Magnum XL-200 has been operational since 1989.
