Nearly a decade after closing all stores, nostalgic toy chain is opening multiple standalone stores in Ohio

Even though we did grow up, aren’t we all still Toys R Us kids? After nationwide closures in the late 2010s, the retail chain that defined many of our childhoods plans to bring multiple standalone stores back to the Buckeye State.

Earlier this month, according a PR Newswire press release, Toys R Us plans to open 120 standalone stores across the country. In 2017, the toy retailer filed for bankruptcy and announced the closure of all its traditional standalone stores nationwide. While the brand opened locations inside of Macy’s stores (including in Easton, Polaris, and more) recently, this is the first time Toys R Us is launching a large-scale opening of standalone stores since its nationwide closures occurred.

Late last year, the brand tested the market by opening 8 permanent stores and 20 temporary locations for the 2025 holiday season.

Currently at least two will set up shop in Ohio. The toy retailer has locations planned for the Eastwood Mall in Niles, and the Great Northern Mall in North Olmsted.

None have been announced yet for Columbus, but the brand hasn’t yet shared where all 120 nationwide stores will be located.
