The Steubenville community is mourning the unexpected loss of longtime teacher and coach, Joe Pierro.

On September 5, Pierro was reportedly struck by lightning while mowing his lawn and later succumbed to his injuries.

Pierro, a Steubenville High School varsity football and baseball coach, had just retired from teaching nearly three weeks before his death after more than 30 years working in the school district.

Steubenville High School posted a statement regarding Pierro’s death on Facebook: “Joe dedicated much of his life to helping young people learn, grow, compete, and believe in themselves. His impact reached far beyond the classroom and playing field—through the countless lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the relationships he built.”

Pierro’s coaching legacy will be honored as the Steubenville football season continues and throughout the year, in remembrance of his impact on the entire community.
