Here’s why helicopters are carrying gigantic, 24-blade saws over Ohio highway
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s…a 24-blade rotary saw. Local police departments near the Ohio Turnpike are warning residents not to be alarmed if they see a giant saw hanging from a helicopter.

The North Royalton Police Department said, “FirstEnergy will be using aerial saws in the coming weeks to clear trees and branches around power lines. The 24-blade rotary saw can cut limbs up to 10 inches in diameter and reach areas that are difficult for ground crews.
The warning comes in advance to help curb shock and avoid unnecessary 911 calls in the area. According to the warning, the saws are suspended from helicopters and used to trim vegetation around transmission lines and electrical equipment.
FirstEnergy said, “The equipment helps prevent tree-related outages and gives crews better access for inspection, maintenance, and repairs.” Ground crews then follow behind to clear debris and ensure the area is safe.
