Ohio sheriff defends ‘warden burger’ fed to inmates found in investigation of jail’s ‘inhumane conditions’
An Ohio sheriff, and what could hardly be called a “burger,” for some, is making international headlines.
“I’m here today to talk to you about the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life,” said Richard K. Jones, the Butler County Sheriff in a public Facebook video.
Jones is referring to a letter sent to the jail. He explained that two democrat Ohio Representatives, Christine cockley (Columbus), Mark Sigrist (Grove City), as well as state Sen. William DeMora (D-Columbus) published a letter earlier this month imploring the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections to investigate the conditions at the Butler County Jail, located in Hamilton, OH.

The letter documents “evidence of dangerous and deteriorating conditions” at this Ohio jail, including overcrowding, heating deficiencies, and—well—the infamous “warden burger.”
This burger is allegedly given to inmates in solitary confinement as an extra punishment. It’s a patty made of tomato paste, flour, dry milk, oats, beans, ground turkey, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, onion, and celery, all mashed together, and placed between two pieces of white bread.
“We don’t put a chocolate on their pillow every day and tell them that we love them,” Jones said in the video. “[The warden burger] is approved by a dietician. It’s probably the most nutritious meal we serve. So you don’t like it, it’s not your mommy or your daddy fixing your meal. It’s jail. You only get that when you get in trouble.”
Jones also said any heating problem would be fixed, and that the jail is 200 inmates under capacity. However, in August, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections released a report that cited there were 49 more inmates there than the department’s recommended capacity, according to The New York Post.
There have been protests outside of the jail this week, specifically for the jail’s contract with ICE. Jones also said that he think he got the letter from only because, “they’re probably whining and crying because I have illegals in my jail.”
“I have 400 illegals in my jail. Don’t come to this country illegally. If you do, sorry, you’re gonna come to jail,” Jones said.
