Ohio State Fair attendees uncover more than $500,000 of missing money this year

Thousands of attendees are closing out this State Fair season with a little more than a funnel cake and a corn dog.

In partnership with the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Unclaimed Funds, the Ohio State Fair had dedicated an “Exploration Commerce” booth with Division representatives to assist fairgoers in uncovering unclaimed money. The 12-day event coincided with the length of the fair and included hands-on support to search for funds and file claims for any money discovered.

At the end of the Fair, 1,561 visitors had initiated claims totaling $675,451.70, with most fairgoers finding an average of $432.70 in missing money. One individual discovered $47,000 in unclaimed funds.

“The Ohio State Fair gives us a unique opportunity to meet people face-to-face and help them discover money they didn’t know they had,” said Akil Hardy, Superintendent of the Division of Unclaimed Funds. “Seeing the excitement when someone learns they have funds waiting for them is truly meaningful. It’s a reminder that the process can be straightforward, and we’re here to make it as easy as possible for every Ohioan.”

The Division’s inclusion at the Fair is an ongoing tradition to help visitors and offer support with a knowledgeable staff. The annual outreach initiative follows a pivotal moment for the Division of Commerce as Lt. Governor Jim Tressel launched a media campaign last month encouraging Ohioans to check for unclaimed funds.

Beyond raising awareness, the division is also working to implement several enhancements to remove barriers that can slow down the claims process. Updates include ending the requirement for a W-9, removing the need for notarization, and adding nearly two dozen staff members dedicated to processing claims.
