Here’s why nearly 2,000 people have signed a petition opposing proposed Mansfield Buc-ee’s
A petition on Change.org with over 1,800 signatures—and counting—is calling for a stop to the planned Buc-ee’s in Mansfield.
On June 2, the Mansfield City Council unanimously approved the Buc-ee’s development located at the Interstate 71 and State Route 39 Interchange.
The petition was created in March and raises concern for the future state of Mansfield’s land, water, and community.
Concerns highlighted include the environmental threat to the city’s wetlands and Rocky Fork River. The development’s vicinity makes these areas vulnerable to oil and gasoline-contaminated residue.
Another claim the petition makes is the economic reality of building a large-scale gas station. The property value of surrounding landowners will decrease due to a potential uptick in traffic, construction, and crime.

According to the development agreement, Buc-ee’s will pay $15 million for water, sewer, and road infrastructure. Once the project is completed, an additional sales tax charge will be applied to the convenience store purchases, with a portion of it used to repay the $15 million to Buc-ee’s.
The petition highlights this exchange claiming, “Taxpayers are essentially subsidizing the very project that will increase their traffic and pollute their water.”
Mansfield will be Ohio’s second Buc-ee’s location, following the Huber Heights location, which opened this April. The company is hoping for completion of Mansfield Buc-ee’s around mid-2028.
