Sewage residue found in Central Ohio grocery store, forced by Health Department to close

Startling red signs posted on the Kroger doors at Worthington Mall yesterday gave customers a fright, especially since the signs were put up by the Columbus Board of Health.

The store was inspected by Columbus Public Health on the 10th, and they found water accumulation that led to sewage backup. As a result, the Columbus Public Health Department forced Kroger to close overnight on February 10th and going into the 11th.

Columbus Public Health stated they weren’t sure what caused the water and sewage backup, but the inspection report shows the facility experienced an “extremely heavy roof leak” near the cash registers, the meat/deli room, retail aisles, near the walk-in freezer, and the walk-in dairy coolers.

The report also states that the Health Department observed sewage drain residue throughout the floor of the bakery and deli…and sewage residue is classified as a critical issue.

All food and non-food contact surfaces were cleaned and sanitized, and all food exposed to the sewage was ordered to be discarded.

Kroger has since reopened.
