‘Something about this is different:’ True crime podcasters tease potential Brian Shaffer update

Jack McLaughlin

Could the disappearance that has haunted Central Ohio for nearly 20 years be near a resolution?

Anyone with even a toe in the water of the ocean that is true crime content is likely familiar with the case of Brian Shaffer, the 27 year-old Ohio State medical student who inexplicably vanished after a night out at campus-area bars in April of 2006.

True crime podcast True Crime Garage—-which is based in Columbus but boasts an international following, previously ranking as high as 38th on the Triton Digital Top Podcasts List– released a followup series on Shaffer this year, as the 20th anniversary of his disappearance approaches. On Feb. 27, however, they made a social media post about a potential breakthrough in the case, coming by way of a tip to the podcast’s team.

“The Captain [the pseudonym given to one of the show’s co-host] and I have worked this case for years. We know the noise. We know the recycled rumors. We know what a weak tip looks like.

Last night, we did not get one of those. After our six-part deep dive on True Crime Garage, the inbox lit up. Most messages were what you would expect. One was not. It was precise. Timeline references. Specific names. Details that align with information we deliberately held back.

The Captain and I were up all night cross-checking notes, revisiting archived material, and testing the tip against what we know and what has never been public,” the post reads.

No further details were shared, but the post said the podcast’s team is “verifying everything carefully and responsibly,” and will share more news when it’s able to.

True Crime Garage also regularly works with The Porchlight Project, a nonprofit dedicated to providing funding for new DNA testing and genetic genealogy for Ohio cold cases.
