Dump truck overturns, leaks natural gas on busy Columbus road

U.S. Route 23 in Southern Franklin County has reopened after being temporarily shut down due to an overturned dump truck.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, around 8:45 a.m. on September 1, a hybrid natural gas dump truck overturned on its side and was leaking natural gas on U.S. 23 on the south side of Interstate 270.

Traffic was diverted to 270 because both U.S. 23 North and South were closed for about two hours, along with the ramp from 270 West to U.S. 23.

Madison Township Firefighters responded to the scene to assess the leak and any injuries. The driver of the truck was not injured and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.

After declaring the leak was not a public threat, the roadways reopened around 11 a.m. the same day. The details of the crash are unclear at this time.
