A frightening few minutes Thursday afternoon at the normally peacefulGerman Village Coffee Shop. That’s when an unhappy customer sprayed workers and other diners with bear repellent over displeasure with her Monte Cristo, one of the shop’s signature sandwiches.

The unidentified woman argued with employees at the popular Thurman Avenue breakfast and lunch spot shortly after 1:00 p.m., then left the restaurant. A few minutes later, she returned and began spraying people just inside the front door with the repellent. She doused two employees and a number of customers before leaving again and driving off in a burgundy Ford Taurus.

Coffee Shop co-owner Craig Burke said the restaurant had to be closed to clear the repellent. Emergency workers treated victims at the scene. Police are asking for help in identifying the attacker. Call Columbus Police at 614-461-4141 or Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477. Burke says there are no plans to change the ingredients for the otherwise popular Monte Cristo.
