A beginner’s guide to dispensary shopping

Jack McLaughlin

Walking into a dispensary for the first time can feel overwhelming, and with so many options and unfamiliar terms, it’s easy to feel unsure of where to start. That’s where this guide comes in.

There’s plenty you can learn beforehand that can smooth out your experience and ensure you’re walking away with exactly what you were after. Here’s what you should know.

Start low and go slow
You can add, but you can’t go back in time and take less. Because of this, products with more predictable dosing and approachable formats are often the way to go. These include:

Low-dose edibles

  • Start with 2.5mg to 5mg of THC, which you can find in Orange Grove Sativa or Mixed Berry Indica Sun Bites
  • Look for 1:1 THC:CBD products (like Tropical Medley 1:1 THC:CBD Sun Bites) for a more balanced experience

Pre-Rolls

  • Part of what makes pre-rolls so popular is also what makes them beginner-friendly: they come in a ready-to-go format with no accessories needed. You can try HillFire full-flower pre-rolls if this sounds like your cup of tea.

Vapes

  • Keeping things controlled and predictable is one way to ensure beginners have the best experience possible, and vapes are perfect for this. You can try Firelands Scientific full-spectrum CO2 vapes for a true-to-strain experience, or HEIR natural botanical vapes for a familiar, fruit-forward journey

Helpful questions to ask at the dispensary
If it’s your first time in a dispensary, knowing which questions to ask can go a long way. We find questions along the lines of: “Which products are beginner friendly?” and “What’s popular right now?” often get people to where they want to be.

Dispensary etiquette
If you’ve never visited a dispensary before, you probably have no idea what to bring, and what you can or can’t do. For starters, you’ll definitely need a valid photo government issued ID (21+).Products are kept behind the counter, rather than on self-service shelves, and it’s also more than fine to take your time and ask questions. Once you’ve made a selection, payment is typically accepted via cash or an ACH cashless payment.

If you’re looking for a local dispensary to try first, make sure to check out The Landing in Franklinton.
