After receiving calls of people hearing “what sounded like a big jet engine,” The Columbus Division of Fire responded to a gas leak today on the intersection of Park and Vine streets, evacuating between 800 to 1,000 people from the North Market and nearby businesses, as well as a construction crew working in the area, CFD Lt. Nick Davis said.

The leak was reported around 1 p.m. near the North Market, and as of about an hour ago, the leak has been contained and people have been allowed back into their businesses, he said. The North Market is remaining closed for the day

Davis said they are unsure what caused the leak. No injuries or illnesses were reported, but that area of Park Street is closed for the next few hours until the gas leak is repaired by Columbia Gas and AEP Ohio, he said.
