‘We’re working on it:’ Bier Stube shares reopening setbacks
An iconic and historic campus bar has been slowly but surely working towards a comeback. The Bier Stube has confirmed that they are working on necessary updates to re-open at their new location. “The Stube” was previously located at 1479 N. High St. since 1966. Due to a construction project for apartments in the area, the historic bar is in the process of relocating to 234 King Ave.
Stube owner, Craig Kempton, took to social media to give the good people of Columbus an update on the slow but steady progress. Kempton posted a nearly 7 minute update via Instagram. He said, “Craig Kempton checking in from the Bier Stube … I’ve been getting a lot of emails and a lot of questions and a lot of things that I’ve kind of not been answering recently.”

Kempton clarified that the rebuild has hit snags, but progress is being made. He said, “The rebuild is going a lot longer than we thought … When we started this process i did not imagine it would be this detailed. So a lot of people have been calling and going ‘what’s going on with the stube, hows the stube’ Honestly, I shut down posting things out of frustration slash anxiety slash pressure…we’re working on it. We’re getting there. We’re getting to that point where its going to start getting fun. Anyway, i’m just here to let you know we are still working on it.”
Kempton expressed frustration that The Stube isn’t quite ready to welcome Buckeyes back in time for football season. He said, “I know it’s opening week of football and boy did we want to be open by now. Yes, of course. I thought we were going to be open months ago but its just not working out that way … BUT we are still moving forward … the bones are looking really good again. I just wanted to let you guys know, everything’s fine, we’re not going to be open [for the first Buckeye game] but i’m seeing a light at the end of the tunnel, I think we’re going to get some football games in.”
He said, “I want to be back, I miss everything about The Bier Stube. I promise you its going to be great … hopefully this answers some questions I’ve been getting. I’m putting it out there: We’re good! It’s looking great. I’m excited again.” The video, posted this morning, already has hundreds of likes and dozens of comments. The comments are mostly an outpouring of support for the project, thanks for Craig’s candor and vulnerability, and excitement at the prospect of crossing the finish line—whenever The Stube is ready to welcome guests back.
