Columbus mall closing after more than 50 years

After 54 years, Eastland Mall will close its doors for good this weekend.

Pete J. Shipley, Communications Director for the Office of Columbus City Attorney Attorney Zach Klein, told 614now in an email that the mall’s final day open will be Dec. 31.

Eastland has been closed to customers since the beginning of this week due to a broken line.

In September, the Columbus City Attorney’s Office announced that Franklin County Municipal Court had held the property owners of Eastland Mall in contempt of a June 2022 court order that required owners to address a number of safety concerns at the mall. These issues included reports of crime, litter and even a sinkhole in the mall’s parking lot. This June order declared the mall a public nuisance. The city also filed a case against the Mall’s property owners in 2021 following failed inspections.

Following September’s court order, the Mall’s owners were fined $250 per day until Eastland was brought into compliance. A followup status hearing was scheduled for Jan. 10 of 2023.
