[youtube id=”DHYkYYikewU”]The Smithereens came to the attention of music fans in the mid-80s with popular tracks like Blood and Roses, Behind the Wall of Sleep, A Girl Like You and their #1 hit from 1988 Only a Memory.
The New Jersey-based band was fronted by Pat Dinizio and gained many fans through airplay on rock / alternative radio and with video plays on MTV. In recent years, a pair of accidents has left DiNizio with nerve damage to his right arm and hand. The injuries have left the uninsured musician without the ability to play guitar and the cost of needed reparative surgery appeared impossible to cover.
But the Columbus Dispatch reports that when a Westerville fan heard about DiNizio’s situation, he decided to step up and take action. Victor Erlanger launched an effort on the website GoFundMe and so far has reached more than $13,000 of his $20,000 goal. (jj)
