Had this happened at another time of year, Zoey the shelter dog could have ended up as a surprise lunch for the lions. As it turns out, it was apparently her lucky day.
The 1-year-old collie mix, adopted from an rescue center just a few days earlier, got away from her new owners in Powell last week. She was later discovered wandering inside the Columbus Zoo’s Heart of Africa exhibit.
With the winter season, the exhibit is mostly uninhabited and so Zoey had the place pretty much to herself. But her presence was detected by zoo security. They notified keepers who went in and retrieved the pup. Soon, with an assist from the Pet FBI Ohio online community, Zoey was reunited with her new family.
