USPS ranks Ohio 3rd ‘Top Dog Bite State’ and Columbus in top 10
Who let the dogs out? No, literally – who in Ohio, and Columbus, is letting their dogs out when the mail carriers arrive? USPS would probably like to have a word with them.
The U.S. Postal Service just released their Dog Bite National Rankings, and unfortunately, Ohio, and our major cities, came out on top.
Data by the USPS shows that Ohio is the 3rd Top 10 Dog Bite State, with 359 dog attacks in 2023, and 311 in 2022. In fact, three major Ohio cities ranked in the Top 10 Dog Attacks by City list: Cleveland Ohio is ranked 5, Cincinnati ranked 8, and Columbus came in at #10. Also noteworthy, Dayton placed at the 17th spot.

California and Texas took first and second place, which makes since considering their population is exponentially higher than ours in Ohio.
Incidents involving dog attacks on Postal Service employees have risen to more than 5,800 cases in 2023, according to the USPS press release. As part of the USPS 2024 National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign, USPS is shining a light on us pet owners who can be good stewards and help employees stay safe while delivering our mail.
The USPS requests that when a letter carrier comes to your home, please keep dogs inside the house or behind a protective fence, away from the door, and/or on a leash.
