Study: laundry pods exceptionally dangerous to young children
According to a new study conducted at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the concentrated laundry detergent fluid found in laundry detergent pods is significantly more dangerous to small children than other detergents.
Not only is the fluid more harmful, but experts say the colorful packaging of detergent pods can look like a toy or candy to children, leading to an increased chance of ingestion.
The Columbus-based study, produced with help from the Central Ohio Poison Center, said that poison control centers nationwide received 62,000 calls related to detergent exposure, and the cases involving detergent pods were the most serious, sometimes leading to breathing issues, or even coma.
The study recommends that households with children younger than six use traditional detergent instead of detergent pods.
