Franklin County to pay for workers’ sex reassignment surgeries
On April 1 Franklin County changed its insurance plan to cover employees’ treatment of gender identity dysphoria.
The new plan will cover sex reassignment surgeries, hormone replacement, surgeries to change secondary sex characteristics such as breasts or the Adam’s apple and counseling.
The city of Columbus has offered similar coverage since 2014.
One Franklin County employee who is undergoing surgery to change a secondary sex characteristic said the new insurance policy is a “life-saving measure.”
Without insurance, the cost of surgeries can reach into the tens of thousands of dollars.
According to the Society for Human Resources Management, about 5 percent of private and government employers nationwide offer similar coverage.
