Former Ohio State football captain Willie “Chico” Nelson was found dead in Grove City Tuesday morning, according to Columbus Police.
Authorities say Nelson likely used a handgun to shoot himself in the chest and left no suicide note. He did, however, send goodbye texts to family members immediately prior to the shooting, according to police.
Police say this was likely not Nelson’s first attempt to take his own life, and he may have previously tried to poison himself with carbon monoxide.
Nelson played for the Buckeyes from 1990-93 alongside Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George, who remembers him as a close friend and a natural leader.
