Urban Scrawl Featured Artist: Pat Kain
Urban Scrawl is coming up this weekend; a 2-day arts festival organized by the Franklinton Arts District featuring the live creation of murals at 400 W. Rich by talented artists from central Ohio and beyond.
Started in 2007, Urban Scrawl has provides Columbus artists a way to showcase their talent while participating in Central Ohio’s largest ongoing urban renewal project.
I was lucky enough to chat with one of the artists attending Urban Scrawl, Pat Kain, a CCAD animation graduate. He spoke with about his desert island dreams, what to expect and what work of his he’d like people to check out.
How did you get involved with Urban Scrawl?
My buddy and fellow animator Sarah Schmidt had done it before, so I’ve been aware of Urban Scrawl for several years but never applied on time to get in. This year I applied and got in.
Going into an event like Urban Scrawl, what can you expect and what can those coming to watch expect? What do you enjoy most about this event?
I know I’ll be really sweaty and busy painting. I’ve never been — so I have no clue what the crowd is like! Not sure what exactly I’ll be making either, it’s a bit of mystery — but that’s part of the fun, right? I’ve been thinking about something involving Bret Hart putting Donald Trump into a sharpshooter. That’s a maybe though.
You’re on a desert island and you’re only allowed to draw one thing for the rest of your forsaken days; what is it?
[without hesitation] A giant football field sized Guy Fieri portrait.
You’ve done work for The Bleacher Report & Adult Swim, what do you do in between projects?
I’m always trying to work on something in between freelance and my day job. I just finished up an animated short Hellscape after a year of working on it. Right now, I’m making a barbarian comic called Rorg of The Blood Swamp. The Kickstarter for that will go up in the Fall of 2016 and a few other…secret things — that I can’t talk about yet.
And finally, you’re an animator — is there any one piece of work you’ve done that could contextualize your body of work up to now and how does that help you going forward?
That’s a really difficult question to answer! I have no idea how any one thing could help me “going forward.” My career has basically been a spray-n-pray of work and hope people still wanna give me money. I do really like my last short though, Hellscape. People should go watch that.
To check out more of Pat’s work, head over to his website and watch his NSFW animation, Hellscape; thanks for the interview!
Pat Kain is a CCAD graduate, lives in Downtown Columbus, and has never been to an OSU football game in the 6 years he’s lived here. He is currently living with his wife, Gibby, and their two cats while slowly getting through Fallout 4. Pat Kain will be at Urban Scrawl on August 27th at noon.
