Publicly Funded Obetz Stadium — Full of Sports No One Watches But Hopefully Will
Fortress Field! $15 Million Bucks! 6,500 seats!
The home of…well…pretty much anything (except racing, which the Columbus Motor Speedway was home to, but since it is being demolished for Fortress Field, it goes without saying that racing will no longer be there…)
According to media sources, The Ohio Machine of Major League Lacrosse and Pro-Rugby affiliate, Ohio Aviators, will call it home and so will half a bajillion other things. It doesn’t really have qualms hosting all secondary, tertiary and niche sports.
This is honestly pretty great. It’s sometimes a little boring to be a town of primarily Football (both kinds) and sometimes Hockey (when they’re doing okay) so it’ll be nice to see some more unique sports blossom and grow. We originally wouldn’t have been a soccer town if it weren’t Columbus taking a chance and maybe we’ll be that front of the…LaCrosse & Rugby Revolution.
This is all part of a 250 acre recreational redevelopment of the area, which has already seen the installation of natural grass athletic fields, baseball and softball diamonds, two stocked ponds, park shelters, an athletic club, archery range, playgrounds, basketball courts, walking trails, and a quarter midget race track.
Obetz Stadium will be publicly funded $15 Million project after Obetz Village purchased the land from Columbus Motor Speedway over the summer for $3 Million.
The Fortress will have a huge office space and will be the home of operations for the Ohio Machine, they’re already planning their first game against Rochester on May 6th.
