COTA Getting Free Wi-Fi in 2017
Sometimes being plugged in can be a good thing — ask anyone who’s ever had their data slowed to a crawl or tried to look something up in a dead spot. That’s why it’s extra exciting that COTA has officially announced that after January 31 all their buses will be equipped with Wi-Fi.
We will be the first large U.S. city to do that according to Michael Carroll, COTA’s information tech director.
The first step for this massive undertaking is to upgrade the Wi-Fi already on the buses that driver’s use to connect and signal other buses — by upgrading this service to 4g the entire fleet becomes a hot spot on wheels.
So — What’s the cost? Well, according to The Dispatch it won’t be breaking anyone’s bank at a measly cost of $250,000k. Looking at the simple math that COTA gives 19 million people a ride annually, it breaks down to a two cent per ride cost for Wi-Fi.
