Ohio Universities Potential Tuition Hike?
Inter-University Council of Ohio, which represents the University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, and the state’s other public universities is seeking a 4.5% increase in state funding for Ohio universities in the next year, according to The Blade.
Why? Because universities are seeing state funding as low as it was before the Great Recession, which means “no progress” in the last eight years, said council president Bruce Johnson to The Blade.
State officials say that the budget for the 2017 fiscal year will be tight, and a representative for Gov. Kasich said that state funding increases are unlikely. Kasich recently insinuated that Ohio could be headed for a recession as tax revenue plummets.
The council, most surprisingly, is also seeking an increase to tuition along with the increase of state funding in addition to a 10% jump in funding for needy students.
According to the article, Ohio hasn’t been very good to higher education funding in the last 50 years, which is why Ohio ranked 40th out of the 50 states in educational appropriations per full-time student in 2015, according to the State Higher Education Executive Officers.
