Local pantry would suffer with Trump’s proposed budget
President Donald Trump’s proposed budget could drastically cut funds for food stamps. Under the proposal, more than $190 billion would be taken away from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) which offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families and provides economic benefits to communities.
This could have a huge effect on local food pantries. Broad Street Food Pantry serves 500 to 600 families each month. If the budget goes through, the number of families could increase to 700. And with the increase in people needing fed, the pantry would be forced to spend more on food. Instead of spending between $5,000 and $7,000 they’d be looking at a monthly bill of $10,000. Church donations are a main driver of food purchasing.
