Testimonies being in Rutledge case

Lincoln Rutledge, who is on trial for allegedly killing a police officer last year, is facing the death penalty. Testimonies at the trial have begun, including one from Rutledge’s estranged wife. She didn’t have much good to say about her ex-husband. She claimed his mental state was deteriorating months before he was arrested and even warned the dog sitter and police about how unstable he was.

On April 10, 2016, police arrived at Rutledge’s apartment on California Ave. after he allegedly tried setting his ex-wife’s house on fire. He was barricaded inside and began firing off rounds at officers. One bullet hit and killed SWAT officer Steven Smith and another nonfatal shot hit an officer’s bulletproof vest.

The prosecutors will bring police officers to the stand to testify how methodical Rutledge was with his gunfire. The four other SWAT officers that were working alongside Officer Smith on April 10 of last year will be brought into court for questioning today.
