Scammers are attempting to convince AEP customers that they owe money and they need to pay on the phone right away. “We continue to hear reports that customers are receiving calls threatening to shut off their power if they don’t make an immediate payment over the phone with a money card,” wrote Karen Sloneker, director of customer service and marketing for AEP Ohio, in an e-mail to customers, warning them of the scam, the Dispatch reported. It isn’t AEP’s policy (in general) to make calls regarding payments.
So don’t worry, the call likely isn’t from AEP on the verge of shutting the power off.
