No joke, America’s top humor writing prize being awarded in Columbus

A little known fact is the highest recognition of humor writing is awarded by a non-profit literary center and museum right here in Columbus. The Thurber House Prize for American Humor is awarded each year to the writer who demonstrates the best, most creative humor in a piece of literature. Comedian Trevor Noah won last year for “Born a Crime,” his memoir about growing up in South Africa, reports 10TV.

Since 2004, the award ceremony was held in New York City but this year, it has been moved to Columbus. This year’s Thurber Prize for American Humor ceremony will coincide with the 125th birthday of the house’s namesake (James Thurber, author, and New Yorker cartoonist) and the Thurber House’s 35th anniversary.

Applications for the American humor award are being accepted now through April. The winner will be named in October and the award ceremony will take place December 6.
