Ohio driver’s license changes have arrived
New changes are in store for your next, highly-anticipated trip to the BMV to ensure greater security and identity protection for customers.
What will change? Beginning July 2, 2018, customers will be:
- Receiving their state driver licenses and identification cards by mail in about 10 days after visiting a Deputy Registrar to allow for every ID to be made in one location
- Receiving a temporary card/confirmation of driving privileges until the card arrives in the mail
- Having the option to have a driver license or identification card that is acceptable for federal identification purposes (Standard DL-ID or Compliant DL-ID respectively)
- Both Compliant and Standard cards allow you to prove your identity for tasks like buying alcohol, obtaining social services, or registering to vote. Only a driver’s license can authorize the operation of a motor vehicle
What will NOT change?
- Deputy Registrars will continue to be part of the driver license and identification card process. Customers will still initiate driver license and identification card transactions by visiting a Deputy Registrar agency, presenting documents (as needed) and be photographed
- Driver licenses and identification cards will continue to be valid for four years and require a new photograph with every renewal
- Customer costs will remain the same for both the standard and compliant cards
