Food Truck Friday: Juicy pork sundaes, cold Ohio brews

Welcome to Food Truck Friday, where, believe it or not, we give you the skinny about a great food truck that regularly sets up camp at a cool location.

Columbus is far from lacking in the mobile grub department but sometime we need a little direction outside of the ol’ standby Thursday Food Trucks at the Commons.

And other times you need your truck food paired with an icy cold adult beverage.

Look no further, friends. Next stop: Platform Beer Co. and Por’Ketta.

Por’ketta

If you aren’t familiar with Por’ketta, listen up.

Por’ketta puts the emphasis on local and has a succinct, but tasty menu. This rolling meat destination has been focusing on marrying Porchetta (boneless pork shoulder) and chicken menu items with American and vegetarian options since 2015.

I’ve recently jumped on the health bandwagon but since my wife was out of town, I treated myself to the Pork Sundae.

Consisting of house made corn bread and topped with potato salad, this dish features the carb-on-carb violence I so surely desired.

Arugula adds a great texture to accommodate the slow roasted pork and the chili lime crema, pickled red onions and cherry pepper are well…the cherry on top.

At $8, this dish has a lot going on (in a good way), is value (and carb) laden and one of the most unique dishes in all of the 614.

Other patrons had chicken tacos, pretzels and a portabella mushroom (vegetarian) sandwich. All came highly-recommended with rave reviews.

Por’Ketta brunch is available from 11-3 on Sundays at Platform Beer Co.

Speaking of Platform…

Platform Beer Co.

Originally from Cleveland and also having a Cincinnati location, Platform opened their Columbus location at 408 North 6th near Columbus State Community College in 2016.

Platform provides a comfortable environment in a low key location that is perfect for beating the heat and getting a drink after a long summer work day.

On my recent Sunday visit, Kelly was behind the bar and she masterfully handled the steady rush that consistently needed watered.

Bicyclists, college students and Comfesters were all in attendance, enjoying beers and the best 200s  indie pop playlist: The Strokes, Bloc Party, The Shins, and Belle and Sebastian.

It was definitely a chill Sunday brunch environment.

From the copious amount of Ohio taps, I chose the New Cleveland Palesner, a hybrid of a Pilsner and Pale Ale with a light body and a strong finish.

Did I mention that on Sunday it is Happy Hour all day long, made better by free meter parking? Don’t be afraid to Uber/Lyft back though.

So there you have it, a Sunday Funday brunch to beat the heat and to support local twice.

Go to Platform for the beer, stay for Por’ketta’s food and leave without your wallet being much lighter.
