The future is here, driverless shuttles now cruising Scioto Mile

Since drivers in Columbus suck so much, maybe you’ll be more comfortable aboard a driverless vehicle.

Ohio’s first self-driving shuttles and world’s largest autonomous and connected vehicle testing facility is now operating along the Scioto Mile, transporting passengers between the Smart Columbus Experience Center, COSI, the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, and Bicentennial Park.

According to the DriveOhio website, the all-electric vehicles, which have a top speed of 25 miles per hour, are outfitted with a powerful array of sensors, cameras and intelligent software to map the route and monitor the environment.

If you’re weary of the technological advancement, rest assured because there is a train attendant on board at all times.

According to The Lantern, the project comes from the combined work of DriveOhio, a new initiative within the Ohio Department of Transportation designed to help bring smart mobility investments and jobs to the state; Smart Columbus, an initiative focused on improving economic growth and quality of life through technological advancements; and Ohio State University.

The launch is the first of a three-phase deployment that will eventually include self-driving shuttles serving multiple routes.

“We’re proud to have the first self-driving shuttle in Ohio being tested on the streets of Columbus,” said Mayor Andrew J. Ginther. “This pilot will shape future uses of this emerging technology in Columbus and the nation. Residents win when we add more mobility options to our transportation ecosystem – making it easier to get to work, school or local attractions.”
