One of the deadliest venomous snakes in North America kept at the Columbus Zoo has a new venom gland, except this one is a silicone implant rather than the highly venomous one it had. The snake’s venom gland had become extremely swollen, and in a surgery last week, the doctor removed the venom gland and replaced it. The surgery only took 15 minutes but took an hour to prep because of how deadly the snake’s venom is. Dr. Randy Junge the chief veterinarian performed the procedure on the snake. Surgery wasn’t the first option though, and workers attempted to use antibiotics along with other methods before trying the surgery.
