Juneteenth Events

Juneteenth has become a holiday for Americans. It recognizes a moment in history when Union troops arrived in Texas on June 19, 1865, to declare that all slaves were free—especially in the deep south.

Though the emancipation proclamation happened two years prior, it took a bit longer in the more southern states and Texas for the word to get out and the necessary actions to be taken.  It’s context in 2020 is deepened as black Americans continue to fight for equality through protests following the death of Geroge Floyd, a black man killed in police custody by Minneapolis, Minn., police officer Derek Chauvin.

Juneteenth is a day to recognize black culture and their continued fight. One very easy way to support the cause is to visit the multitude of black-owned businesses throughout Central Ohio.

Join BQIC and the @cbusfreedomcoalition on June 20th, 2020 at Mayor Ginther’s house for our Until We Are All Free Speak-Out! Address: 4129 Rowanne Ct This current moment of global uprising led by Black folks in response to the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis continues to reveal that Black death is unavoidable in a police state. Moments like these also remind us who we need to fight for most in the struggle against police violence, white supremacy, and capitalism. The movement for Black liberation must include the liberation of ALL Black people. Black trans people. Black queer people. Poor and working class Black people. Black immigrants and refugees. Black sex workers. Incarcerated and formerly incarcerated Black folks. So on and so forth. We must remember Nia Pop. Tony McDade. McKinsley Lakeith Lincoln. Monika Diamond. Dominique Fells. Riah Milton. And many more whose names we don’t know. None of us are until we are all free! Black folks have been killed by Columbus Police without consequence or repair on Mayor Ginther’s watch for far too long, so let’s turn up at his house to speak out against the conditions in our city! Come ready to make some noise on Saturday! Organizers and community members will share demands and personal experiences, performers will bless the mic with their art, and a live DJ will provide the tunes throughout! Bring signs, instruments, and sunscreen! This will be a celebration of Black life and a direct call for abolition in Columbus! There are concrete steps we can take together to #AbolishThePolice, to reclaim the resources that should have already been going to the people, and to strengthen our communities from within. Schedule of speakers and performers coming soon! We will have transportation and ASL interpretation. If you need a ride, call/text (937) 467-1867. Transportation is wheelchair accessible. #BlackTransLivesMatter ~ “A Black revolution makes everyone freer than they actually want to be.” — Saidiya Hartman
