Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary star commits to Ohio State

Ohio’s top-ranked prospect for the class of 2021 says he wants to play for Ohio State men’s basketball.

Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary shooting guard Malaki Branham announced the decision Wednesday afternoon, joining fellow Ohioans Meechie Johnson and Kalen Etzler in committing to play under coach Chris Holtmann.

The 6-foot-four-inch, 175-pound Branham is No. 27 nationally and the No. 5 shooting guard in the 247Sports composite rankings.

He chose the Buckeyes over Alabama, Baylor, Cincinnati, Louisville, Wake Forest, Missouri, Marquette, Xavier, and others.

Ohio State was the first major conference school to offer Branham, who lived in Columbus prior to his Akron move for high school.

Living in Akron means he plays for the alma mater of NBA star LeBron James, and James sent Branham his congratulations via Twitter.

With Branham’s commitment, the Ohio State 2021 class currently ranks No. 2 nationally behind top-ranked Baylor.
