Fun ways to horse around during this year’s Kentucky Derby

The 146th Kentucky Derby is this Saturday, Sept. 5, and some celebrations are still on track.

The iconic horse race makes up the first leg of the American Triple Crown, and it has become a mainstay of American culture, with countless traditions ranging from chilly mint juleps to extravagant floral headwear. Thanks to COVID-19, this year is already looking different; the race was postponed from its traditional early May date to September, and Churchill Downs stadium in Louisville will allow a limited audience (topping out at a mere 23,000 guests) to see the race in person.

For those who would prefer to view the festivities from somewhere a little less crowded and a lot more local, we have found some Derby day events and special offers that are sure to delight.

SOW Plated

The Upper Arlington eatery–focused on sustainable, organic food–will offer fresh mint juleps and fan-favorite cold-pressed watermelon cocktails, both served in officially licensed commemorative glassware that you can take home. In addition, anyone who dines in while wearing a Derby-themed hat Friday or Saturday will receive a gift.

Crooked Can Brewing Company

Because the Derby falls on the fifth, Crooked Can in Hilliard is celebrating Cinco De Derby with specialty cocktails, mint juleps, and margaritas. There will also be a hat parade where a winner will get to claim a prize.

Greater Columbus Convention Center

Don’t worry, there won’t be a massive convention center watch party spreading germs around. The GCCC is hosting a carryout offer called The Derby Dining Box, which includes two appetizers, two slider entrees, one side, beverages, betting tickets, and a trophy so you can celebrate the big race from home.
